One of the officers
of the fourth reinforcement contingent is Major S A GRANT, N.Z.S.C.,
who was formerly actively associated with military affairs in Auckland.
Major Grant started his military career in 1898 as a private in the
No.1 NZ Native Rifles at Auckland and after having passed through the
non-commissioned ranks he received a commission in the 9th NZ Contingent
for South Africa, where he saw plenty of active service. In 1909 he,
together with three other officers, was selected for two years training
in the Regular Army at Home, where he was attached to the 20th Regiment,
Lancashire Fusiliers. He worked hard, and put in a lot of time at the
School of Musketry, taking a keen interest in musketry and machine gun
work. On his return to NZ in 1911, he was appointed, on the inception
of the territorial system of training, brigade-major to the Otago Mounted
Rifles Brigade, and was stationed for some time at Oamaru.
